The answer to this varies from person to person.
A Social Media Manager, by definition, the individual trusted with monitoring, contributing to, filtering, measuring and otherwise guiding the social media presence of a brand, product, individual or corporation.
Many businesses are starting to create this role in their company, finding that the managing of social platforms is a time consuming job for one person to take on, along with their other duties. If done right, the social media presence of a brand should have many factors. It is not just about posting on social media but creating a strategy to optimize your posts. Simply posting a picture on Instagram is not enough anymore. There must be a purpose behind your business’ post. That is where a Social Media Manager comes in.
A Social Media Manager helps to create that strategy based on your business’ goals. The reason that Social Media Manager duties vary from person to person is because not every Social Media Manager does it all.
For example, some specialize in creating a strategy and posting but not creating the content (taking pictures and videos). Some Social Media Managers focus on a certain platform such as only working on strategies for Instagram and Facebook but not TikTok or vice versa.
It is important to know exactly what you would like to get out of your time with a Social Media Manager before doing your research on who to hire.
How did I become a Social Media Manager?
When I was in college, I did not know the role of a Social Media Manager was a possibility. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to get into marketing, because I love understanding how the consumer mind works, and I also knew I wanted to get into social media/digital marketing. But, I just didn’t know in what way.
I studied at Fairfield University and majored in Marketing with a focus in digital/social media. My sophomore year, I had an internship with a local website. The owner of this website went on to start a digital marketing agency. I was with her through all the steps from watching her get local clients to gaining their social media to manage. She allowed me to manage a few accounts, doing the posting and community management. As I was an intern, I realized I really liked what I was doing but did not know it could be a career.
After school, I applied to any and every marketing job. I do not recommend doing this. I got a great job offer…for Offline Marketing. Pretty much the opposite of what I knew I wanted to be doing. As my first job offer, I did not feel like I could turn this down.
Time went on at the job and I grew to be more and more miserable every day. To make up for the lack of digital and social media work I was doing, I started to do it on my own on the side. That was when I realized this is what I want to spend my full time doing. After saving up some money, I felt comfortable enough to quit my job and pursue social media management full time.
And that is how I ended up here!
